Our Kindermusik teacher, Miss Jeanie, sent us this recipe last night. We tried it this morning...it was pretty good! And there is actually enough snow outside that you can get some nice, clean-ish snow to use. Here is her email:
Growing up in Kentucky we often had snow, much like today's snow here in North Texas, and as long as it was at least 4" deep you could count on one thing --- my dad would make snow cream! He grew up during the depression, in Apalachia, and making snow cream was something they looked forward to as an economical way to have a sweet treat. My own children grew up with snow cream and I thought you might enjoy making it tonight with your children! Go outside with a big bowl and scoop up clean snow from the top, don't let your spoon/ladle go deep enough to get down to the grass. It takes just a few minutes to have so much fun! Don't eat it too fast or you'll have "brain freeze" as it is very, very cold!
Use approximately 1 gallon of snow to 1 cup of sugar to 1 tablespoon of vanilla. Then stir in 1/2 - 3/4 cup milk til it's the consistency you want. You can put the leftovers in the freezer but it's not as good as when you eat it fresh!
I made half a batch, although I still used about 1/2 to 3/4 cups of milk. You could also use half and half or sweetened condensed milk...you won't need sugar if you use the condensed milk. It tasted like fluffy, slushy, soft serve ice cream...not bad! Gabby loved it.
Try it before the snow melts! If you don't, you might have to wait another 30 years before we get enough snow to have the opportunity again!

I am SO glad you posted this! I remember seeing someone make this on television at some point and wanted to make it today! I am heading outside right now! I even have a random can of sweetened condensed milk in the pantry! YUM!
